My current Thaumaturge is a Human Beastkin (werewolf) who uses his Dire Form and a Gnome Flickmace (reskinned as an axe on a chain) Weapon Implement, a Chalice and the Mirror. Built fully as a support martial. He's level 18 with the Weapon as his Paragon, Adept Mirror and he grabbed the extra Adept for his Mirror.

Basically it lets you get a regular 2nd level class feat instead of spending it on a multiclass feat. It's more limited since you can't use it for non-multiclass archetypes but is generally going to be valuable. The goal of Paired Shots being improved DPR, there's no reason not to find a way to get Unconventional Weaponry and a RHC build. Especially so because part of the air repeater power budget goes toward the agile trait, which has little place in a Paired Shots build.
