For me, the dumbest thing about summoner is the gap in progression between Hornet and Spider, and then Spider and Tiki/whatever. Hornet is the first and only summoner armor you get early game. You HAVE to wear that for every fight in earlygame, and it's not really a great armor for Skeletron or the Wall of Flesh.

Each one is different from the rest, though obviously some are more powerful than others. Obsidian Outlaw is pretty good and can serve you well into Hardmode if you are good at dodging. However iirc the progression goes from the beginning of Hardmode.
