Their skills pretty much don't matter, even at the highest levels that troops get the bonuses are fairly negligible. its all about their equipment.The problem with infantry is they are inherently the weakest unit type because of fundamental elements of how the combat system and AI work.
The new system barely works and focuses on sorting by equipment, but has serious limitations when you want to separate lower-tier troops for xp-farming. You want to use the icons, (particularly helmet for more armor) to separate more armored troops from recruits/ low tier of the same type into separate groups.
