In my opinion the absolute best starter weapon is the saw cleaver. I started my first character with the axe, and just couldn't get into the moveset. After spending probably 5 hours stuck in yarhnam I made a new character with the cleaver and something just clicked. The cleaver has killer damage, hits quick, and has good reach when extended.
