Tim, Remington's website shows exactly 1/2 lb. difference between the two - that's actually quite a bit, in my opinion, just for the occasional 3-1/2" capability. Used 870's are definitely the way to go. There's very little that can be "wrong" with a pump shotgun and only a slim chance that you'd get a dud.

I’ve seen Maverick 88s in the field operate just fine with abnormal abuse, while some of my friends who bought Freedom Group 870 Express models have had nothing but trouble. Shells stuck in rough, unpolished chambers, weak ejection/stovepiping because of MIM parts, finishes that rust while the gun is on the store shelf, etc.Let him shoot your 500 a little bit and let him see if he likes it.
