Not sure of the specifics of that, just that the more sleep you have the more you heal. :p Other than that, you never have to sleep if you dont want to, and can work as long into the night, or the next morning, that you desire. I still recommend sleeping tho if you arent strapped for time tho, since villagers also sleep at night time.

For those of you just starting out or anyone who feels rushed to complete quests before the seasons change - I highly recommend settling your seasons to 30 days long. You can skip to the next season any sleep after the third night. This allows me to take my time hunting and exploring without feeling rushed. I can tackle side quests at my own pace.
