Just wondering how much hp can these stock internals actually handle. The tech guide said you can get a reliable 400hp on the stock internals. I think the first thing to fail in a stock calibrated TH400 due to power would usually be the direct clutches. The sprag is a weak point also but I think engine rpm is as much of a killer as power. But some were rated higher depending on it's application. 1989 was not a high horsepower maybe 230 or torque motor if I recall correctly. You could just have that trans freshened up to handle new motor.It has the splayed center three main caps- I am up at 676 Hp, and I am thinking about it a lot. The stock bottom is supposed to be able to handle 8 lb of boost. That should be good for close to 100 HP. That should get ya close to 400 HP ... is about 1000 lbs lighter which means a lot less stress on the entire drive train, which can really help, however 400 hp is 400 hp, a lot of how it will live depends on how carful you are with it. If you want something reasonably reliable for a modded car, at 600+hp, you might as well build the engine.
