Measure the height of the door opening on the intended hinge side. Use a tape measure. Measure on the inside of the door opening. An easy way to figuring out which side the handle should be on a screen door is by pretending you're outside of the home and facing the door. If the screen door opens in (towards the left), the door handle will be on the right-hand side. If the screen door opens out (towards the right), the door handle will be on the left-hand side.
